SMRT Architects and Engineers is moving its local office this spring from Latham to downtown Schenectady.
The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority announced SMRT will occupy more than 5,000 square feet on the fifth floor of the Center City Building at 433 State St.
The office will have 15 employees, and could grow bigger.
SMRT’s lease is expiring at 11 Century Hill Drive in Latham. The firm searched for a new location and picked Schenectady, according to Ellen Belknap, president.
“As design professionals, we recognize the momentum Schenectady is generating in its downtown, and we’re excited to be part of the community’s future as we grow our presence in the Northeast,” Belknap said in a prepared statement. “Schenectady’s location will serve as a strategic base for our work in healthcare, science and technology, education, government and corporate environments, including sustainability, historic preservation and adaptive reuse.”
SMRT has designed projects for GE Healthcare, Saratoga Hospital, Ellis Hospital, Excelsior College and many state and county government agencies, including the new Greene County Correctional Facility.
The firm also has offices in Maine and Massachusetts.
Center City is a $30 million, 200,000-square-foot mixed-use building owned by the Galesi Group.
